Meteor Showers

In darkness
stars fall from
their place in heaven.
In shadows
I walk
long narrow corridors
of thin carpet
the woven fruit
now rotted.
I wear that dressing gown
sheer blue cool
a lustrous ghost
haunting hallways
I cannot quite recall.
Passing many closed doors
turn left turn right;
What makes a woman
choose a man?
Inside this room
He is out
for cocktails or dinner
and I search through his closet
Smell his scent on a shirt
His razor and comb wait
on the bathroom counter.

I have wandered far
And am alone again
in recurring dreams
You made your choice
not to follow me
and finally I can feel
how far away you have slipped;
Was there ever really a time
We two belonged to each other?

Tonight again
The Perseids
like every other August
but this one comes
in the time of the new moon
And the wolf inside me howls
Hungry for something
not yet defined.

Summer spins
this humid night
that stick to skin
more earthly
more immediate
than the punishment
of infinity.
